Her eyes opened. Darkness surrounded her. The last thing she could remember was the dinner party. They had been engaged in a delightful conversation with the Berefords. They were visiting from Cornwall and they had many stories about living by the sea.
One moment she remembered hearing about the seagulls stealing Mr. Bereford's tophat, and the next, she remembered feeling the room closing around her until all she saw was darkness.
She was not in her home now. She wasn't quite sure where she was. Her high collar felt constrictive as the oxygen was becoming more limited by the moment. Her mind raced and she tried to make sense of her surroundings.
The silence was complete except for her breath. The realization hit her. She screamed at the top of her lungs and smacked her hands against the lid. It was useless. What could she do?
She remembered what should be in the tiny prison with her. She squeezed her hands along her sides feeling them get crushed against the walls of the casket. She felt and felt until she touched the cool metal.
She pressed down and the bell rang out echoing in the darkness. She heard tapping and scraping above her. Suddenly light flooded her and she closed her eyes.
"Sorry miss looks like you were really were saved by the bell." The undertaker reached out his hand to help her out of the coffin.
She looked around the graveyard and wondered how many bells had rung here. She gazed at the sky and pondered her good fortune.
